In a spurt of deep nostalgia, I purchased this old, wonderful, classic cookbook--one of the first I had, back in the 60s. It's heavy on the basics, and it contains some recipes that I continue to adore (mostly French in origin). The egg nog is outstanding. Yorkshire pudding (with roast beef), Craig Claiborne's is the best. It's as fundamental as the old Joy of Cooking, but far, far better. Recipes range in difficulty, but all are simply laid out (no fat on the pages), well written and described. These recipes tell you what you're going for and help you get there with minimal confusion. This is a heritage cookbook if ever there was one. She introduced us to strange things like "curries", which no WASPy 7 year old could fathom. I just smile & salivate paging through this walk through my history
